Avalon ISD Nominated for National Blue Ribbon School

Avalon School is one of only 25 campuses in Texas that has been nominated for the 2014 National Blue Ribbon School recognition by the Texas Commissioner of Education. The U.S. Department of Education program honors schools for academic excellence or for dramatically improving student performance. Winners will be announced in Washington in September. The Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle and high school campuses.

The program has been in existence since 1982. In that time, more than 7,000 schools have received the award from the U.S. Department of Education. The nomination was submitted by the Texas Commissioner of Education Michael Williams.

The schools are selected for one of two honors:

• Improving--Schools that dramatically improve student performance to high levels on state tests

• High Achieving--Schools whose students rank in the top 10 percent based on performance on their state standardized tests.

Avalon qualified for this prestigious award as an exemplary achieving school and also meets the criteria of serving over 40% of students that meet criteria for economically disadvantaged.

Honored schools receive a plaque and flag to signify National Blue Ribbon status. Avalon School has until March 21 to apply for the award. Those who are chosen are honored at an awards ceremony in Washington D.C. in the fall. These schools also serve as models for other schools throughout the state and the nation.

Superintendent Dr. David Del Bosque stated, “This is a tremendous honor for Avalon School. We are beyond excited to have been chosen as one of the 25 campuses in the State of Texas to be nominated for this national award. The award is the gold standard in education for those schools striving for the highest level of achievement and academic excellence for their students.”

Dr. Del Bosque continued, “This nomination speaks to the commitment and dedication to education by our students, faculty, staff, and the administration of Avalon ISD. We continue to make great strides in providing quality instructional programs to ensure that our students are prepared for their future. I am thrilled and so very proud of our school and community.”

For many years, any school could apply for the Blue Ribbon School nomination. That has changed and each state’s chief education officer submits a pre-determined number of nominations from that state that qualify according to the national criteria.
