Hello
FRESHMEN Algebra 1 Class,
This is Mr. King. I know that school doesn't start for another month, but I wanted to establish contact. And, this is a test email through Google Classrooms. I'm learning how to use more technology and this is one of my attempts at learning.
I have sent each of you an "INVITATION" to join my Algebra 1 Google Classroom. Whether we get to come back to the classrooms this year or if we stay at home and do virtual learning, we are going to use Google Classroom as our primary source of communication and as an instructional tool. So, please, you will all need to accept the invitation so that you won't miss out on anything.
As of today, 7/2/2020, we don't know positively what the start of school is going to look like. We may not know for sure even in late July. Please keep checking the Avalon ISD website and my Teacher Page for information. Also, your parents are going to be receiving a survey about their desires for the start of the school year.
Being comfortable with Algebra 1 is VITAL. You were learning Algebra 1 even in elementary school, but you didn't realize it.
I believe that if you:
- can add, subtract, multiply, and divide
- understand INTEGERS (positive AND negative numbers)
- use exponents
- understand fractions (which are really division problems in disguise)
- can solve one-step and multiple-step equations
- are willing to learn multiple-step problems
then you can do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING in math.
Calculators? In my opinion, your brain can often be faster than a calculator. My goal this year is to make you less dependent on calculators. Toward that goal, I'm going to ask all of you to do a favor for yourself. This is going to sound kind of silly, but I would like all of you to know the 12x12 multiplication table BY HEART. The first "test" of the year will be a timed test of the multiplication table. The problems will be in random order, I'll tell you how much time you have, I'll say "GO" and start the stopwatch, and at the end of that time, I'll say "STOP". Sounds easy, right? When you're under the pressure of having only a few minutes to complete this, it can be a bit tricky and confusing. I want you all to KNOW IT BY HEART. Trust me, if you can get your brains firing quickly and accurately, you'll find that you begin to rely on calculators less and less.
One way or the other, this is going to be a great year. My goal is to make Algebra 1 easy for all of you. We will use a variety of tools to help learn. We'll use Google Classroom, Sapling, Study Island, YouTube, and other tools that will help us understand math a lot better. Please know that I will never ask you to work problems "my way". I've learned over the years that there is often more than one way to solve a particular problem. I need EVERY ONE of you to be willing to share alternative ways to solve problems if you prefer a different method. I want to learn too.
Please communicate with each other and make sure everyone knows that I've sent out this Google Classroom invitation.
YOU ARE NOW IN HIGH SCHOOL!!! Let's start your year off working hard, working together, and being as successful as possible despite these weird times that we are in right now.
J King
